Ice fishing

  • It was only 24 degrees Tuesday afternoon, but Jason Ludden of Wellsville braved the chilly weather to try to catch some largemouth bass, walleye, muskellunge, crappies or sunfish at Gifford Pinchot State Park. He's been fishing at the park for five years, and stays comfortable inside his enclosed heated, lighted shanty. Ice fishermen are hitting area lakes and waterways, including Gifford Pinchot State Park. Park manager Robert Defner suggests anglers or skaters should check the Fish and Boat Commission website at for safety advisories. Ice should be at least four inches thick to be safe for a single angler or skater. For current conditions, check Bil Bowden photos.
