Students take part in Community Action simulation

  • Nearly 85 students experience the virtual realities of poverty through a simulation organized by York College faculty, Tuesday April 15, 2014. Kelsey Gilligan, a junior psychology major from Brick, N.J., lead the event; she is completing an independent study with Associate Professor of Psychology Jennifer Engler, one of the faculty organizers. A number of the participants were staff members of the Community Progress Council in York. The Community Action Poverty Simulation (CAPS) is designed to sensitize those who frequently deal with low-income families as well as to create a broader awareness of poverty among policymakers, community leaders and others. CAPS is designed to help the participants begin to understand what it might be like to live in a typical low-income family trying to survive from month to month, according to Gilligan. “But it is not a game. The object is to sensitize participants to the realities faced by low-income families,” she said. The Simulation, which is a interdisciplinary project taken on by several faculty members of the Department of Behavioral Science, consists of four 15-minute weeks during which the families need to provide for basic necessities and shelter. While CAPS calls for some families to be newly employed, others may be recently deserted by the "breadwinner," homeless, recipients of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), and with or without additional income. The whole experience lasts about three hours including the introduction and briefing period, the actual simulation, and the debriefing period in which participants are able to share their experiences, thoughts, and feelings about what they have learned, according to Gilligan.
