York Junior Symphony Orchestra (YJSO) was founded in 1967 and is made up with students from fifth to eighth grades. YJSO believes they are the only full symphonic orchestra of this age between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh that play at a level 4. Music levels run 1-8 with 8 being professional. That means YJSO plays at a high school level orchestra according to Kim Graby, president of the YJSO board. Students are recommended for August auditions by local school band and orchestra leaders as well as private instructors. With York County school districts talking budget cuts Graby is concerned it will effect the symphony because the schools are YJSO's feeder programs. She adds that if you take the music programs out of the school system then " you go back to an era when only the wealthy could afford to give their children private instrumental lessons."
